Retro Sci-Fi sreensaver doesn't work on windows 10 x64

It stops at launch presenting the following error "Error in modMakeRandomWord.LoadArray: 5 invalid procedure call or arguement"

Have russian language win10. Maybe it's a problem for this screensaver to find some file. At one russian forum was guy who had two PCs with rus and eng distrbutives and with english ver of Windows it's works. But he didn't found solution.

I really want to know what the problem and if I can fix it

  • Hello Gor,

Sorry to learn it's not working for you. I have seen multiple reports of that error with this screensaver but have yet to find a solution. However, just now I have also read some reports that such an "Invalid procedure call or argument" error can indeed be caused by language settings. So it's possible that the screensaver would work if you were to change your Windows language to English, like you wrote.

In that case, there's something in the software that trips over the processing of certain characters. Specifically, the function modMakeRandomWord apparently fails trying to generate a random word. We don't have the source code, unfortunately, so it's difficult to figure out exactly what it's trying to do, but the code probably assumes it's running on an English version of Windows.

I'm afraid it's probably not possible to solve this without a change in the screensaver itself, and that's unfortunately no longer being maintained by the developer.

I believe the screensaver was written in the Visual Basic programming language, and that doesn't have good support for unicode, which allows for the representation and manipulation of a vast array of characters from different languages and symbol sets, including Russian.

If I ever find a workaround, I'll be sure to let you know here.

  • Tried to change system language to English, including date and time format, but screensaver still don't works. I'll try to install this screensaver to other PC to test how will it work. Maybe it's problem with this laptop. Also I'll try to install screensaver to old Win 7 laptop, if it still works. New versions of Windows 10 may not include something important to program, I think
